If schools are cancelled due to inclement weather, LLI is also closed. If the schools have a "delayed opening" LLI will open at 10 am.

Spring 2012

Aboujaoude, Ramzi   is an OB-GYN with Richmond OB-GYN and has special training in urinary incontinence and pelvic reconstruction, as well as minimally invasive surgery. He received his medical degree from Saint Joseph University, Beirut, Lebanon. After completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Saint Joseph University and the University Of Paris, France, Dr. Aboujaoude did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

Banyasz, Barbara
began studying piano at age eight at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia. She put piano on the back burner while raising her family and rekindled her enthusiasm for music and the piano once her children went to college. Along with a neighbor, Barbara started the "Hausmusik" social group where adults of all skill levels come together to play any instrument to share in the enjoyment of music.

Bouchard, Christine
is a board certified surgeon, specializing in colon and rectal surgery. She received her medical degree from Indiana University School of medicine and completed her internship and residency in surgery at Eastern Virginia medical School. She also completed a surgical fellowship specializing in colon and rectal surgery with the John H Stoger Hospital of Cook County, Illinois. Dr Bouchard is the only female surgeon specially trained in colon and rectal surgery in the Richmond area. She is also trained in all aspects of general surgery with a special interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic procedures and hernia and gall bladder surgery.

Bowie, Debbie
is what you’re holding onto holding you back? That is the mantra of Debbie Bowie, veteran speaker, Certified Professional Organizer®, feng shui practitioner and author of Rock Scissors Paper: Understanding How Environment Affects Your Performance on a Daily Basis. She is the owner of the Rock Scissors Paper Institute, formerly Simply Organized, a company she formed in 1998 whose mission is to help people clear a path to getting more of what they really want from life. Debbie believes the condition of our living and work environments has a direct impact on what is happening in our lives.

Boyce, Matthew is a Neurologist with Neurological Associates of Richmond. He specializes in Deep Brain Stimulation as a therapy for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. He received his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency training at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and he recently completed his fellowship in Movement Disorders from the same university.

Bradstock, Mary
has been an LLI member since 2009. She has been facilitating the line dance practices as well as assisting with the line dance classes.

Brown, Virginia
has a degree in home economics and has been a home economics and family and consumer science teacher. She is starting her own business called Urban Pantry.

Brown, Sherella
is a certified Jazzercise fitness instructor who specializes in working with active adults who combine dance with exercise.

Burris, Sheila
is a certified yoga instructor who has studied yoga since 1999. She began teaching with us in the spring of 2008.

Busch, Bill 
Trained to become an Arthur Murray dance instructor 50 years ago but didn't start instructing until Sept.2007. He met his wife, Helen, at a dance 46 years ago and they have had many decades of dancing pleasure and experience together. They express that they are constantly improving and have not yet peaked. Now they want to help other couples to experience the joy of dancing together.

Byrne, Adrienne
received a B.S. in Marketing and an M.S. in Health Promotion and Gerontology from Virginia Tech. She worked with the Director of the Center on numerous projects including Chronic Pain in Later Life, Sexual Abuse in Older Adults, as well as a huge Guardianship project in Southwest Virginia. She currently serves as HCA - CJW Medical Center's Director of Business Growth - Healthy Aging/Rural Outreach. She is a current member of the LLI Board of Directors.

Calpin, James
is a Board Certified Industrial Hygienist and served as Laboratory Director of Analytics Corporation – an accredited environmental testing laboratory in Ashland, Virginia. He holds a BS and MS degrees in Chemistry and has worked in environmental testing services for over thirty years.

Casey, Thom MS, CCC-A, F-AAA, has a bachelor's degree in Biology from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA and a master of science in Audiology from Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, PA. He is certified nationally in audiology, holding a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology granted by the American Speech- Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), and is licensed by the State of Virginia for audiology and for hearing aid dispensing. Thom has practiced audiology in central Virginia since 1984 and started Advanced Hearing Specialists, Inc. in 2000.

Chicklo, Ida , a member of LLI, is the sister of Diana Donahue. She has been dancing for years, and loves tap.

Clatterbaugh, John is a skilled senior fly fisherman and an experienced fly fishing instructor for senior adults. He also is a certified lay speaker in the United Methodist Church and has conducted positive mental attitude courses for senior adults and has taught continuing education in community colleges for over 30 years.

Clinton, Mary Lou has a BA in Art Education and MA in Education. She was an Art educator for 40 years and taught a variety of media. She volunteers at the VMFA in the educational outreach program and is a mentor at Reams Road Elementary School. Mary Lou is a pen and ink artist and calligrapher and also a costumer and set designer with SPARC.

Conley, Ed is a writer and photographer in Blackstone, Virginia, where he also teaches meditation. Integrative Restoration and offers Silver Thread Dialogues on Facebook.

Crider, Glenn is widely respected as one of the best Nutcracker artisans in America if not the world. His work has been featured in numerous publications including Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, Wood Magazine and many others. In 2008, the United States Postal Service featured four of Glenn's designs on the first U.S. Christmas Stamps to honor the age-old craft. A self-taught artist, Glenn has been perfecting his craft for more than twenty-five years. Up to now, he has works on display in several museums around the world including the Smithsonian Institute.

Curry, Wade Ph. D, for 27 years, taught English and theatre courses and served as Dean of Arts and Sciences at College of New Jersey. For 10 years, he was the Director of Advanced Placement at the College Board.  Member since 2009.

Davidson, James is a Certified Financial Planner and Vice President of Investments with The Howren-Davidson Group at Davenport & Co., LLC. Mr. Davidson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and his AAMS® designation from the College for Financial Planning. Accomplished in the financial industry, Jamey previously served as a Financial Specialist for Wachovia Bank.

Davis, Linda E has been a member at LLI Chesterfield since 2009. She has been facilitating hospice activities since 2010.

Davis, RD, Pam is a Registered Dietician (RD) and Clinical Dietician with Chippenham and Johnston Willis medical Centers and spends most of her time working with Outpatients (those who live at home and come to CJW for rehab) and Cardiac Rehab patients. She is also active in the Richmond dietetic Association locally.

Donahue, Diana a member of LLI, is the sister of Peggy Chicklo and has been dancing for years. She loves tap dancing.

Dufficy, Pauline has been dancing for 8 years under the instruction of our own member and instructor, Barbara Rozett.

Ellenberger, Gary is a member of the Lifelong Learning Institute; and he also serves as Vice-President on the Board of Directors. Mr. Ellenberger is retired from Dominion Virginia Power as Director of Material Support. He has also worked as Director of Operations (General Manger) for Ingram Book company. He has experience in Material Management, operations, Accounting and several other financial areas including tax preparation.

Franks, Martha has been painting for nine years. She was a student of Ellie Cox and Sarah Hoyle. She is President and an exhibiting member of the Bon Air Artists Association, an exhibitor at the Crossroads Art Center, a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society and a participant of Arts on the Lawn.

Garrett, Ed is a retired United Methodist minister of the VA Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has served churches in VA for 42 years, leading Bible studies and teaching educational classes for various denominations. He holds a B.A. degree from the University of Richmond, a B.D. from Duke University, an M.A. degree in education from Union Theological Seminary and a doctorate from St. Mary’s University in Baltimore. He is the author of two books and various curriculum materials and articles.

Gaworski, Geri is a native of Minnesota and started dancing at the age of four. She attended the University of Utah where she took full advantage of their many classes in ballet, modern and folk dancing.

Germain, Marcia has been an art teacher for 30 years. She spent her first three years teaching at Prince Edward County High School and recently retired from Trinity Episcopal School where she taught for 27 years. She is a world traveler who loves teaching.

Gibbs, Debbie is a current member of LLI. Participating in previous painting classes at LLI, her classmates have encouraged her to lead a painting class with us.

Gospodnetic, Marijan Originally from Croatia and raised in Canada, Dr. Gospodnetic received his MD in 1971 from the University of Ottawa Medical School. Dr. Gospodnetic has a large obstetrical practice and particularly enjoys providing obstetrical care to patients whom he delivered when they were born, thus caring for three generations from the same family.

Granger, Carol has been a member at LLI Chesterfield since 2009. She has been participating in the Decorative Painting class.

Green, Tracy is a teacher in Chesterfield County Public school system. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Masters in Teaching and minor in Italian. She studied in Perugia, Italy, in 2006. She is a lifelong language lover and learner, and is in love with the Italian language and culture.

Gupta, Dipin is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates. He attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College, did his internship and residency at Temple University, and also trained at the Mayo Clinic. He went on to complete an M.B.A. at Temple University and completed his Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at New York University.

Hahn, Al is experienced in information retrieval outside academia. He produced and delivered history programs for lifelong learners at Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. He is a member of the Society of Military History and Company of Military Historians.

Herman, Patricia having initially learned how to knit from her mother, has been knitting and crocheting all of her life. She volunteers her time and talents for a knitting healing ministry with her church. She also enjoys participating in knitting workshops and conferences.

Hodge, James D worked as a college official in 167 games over a 22 year period in the mid-Atlantic region in venues ranging as small as Hampden-Sydney to as large as Penn State. In real life, he is a retired research chemist (DuPont) with a PhD degree.

Holljes, Sarah for her hometown of Richmond as well as the beauty and history ois a Class of 2010 Studio Art grad from the University of Mary Washington. Born and raised in Virginia she has a passion for her home state. She has been blessed to inherit the cameras of one photographer grandfather and the brushes, paints and canvases of her other painter grandfather both of which she uses frequently in her art making.

Ikerd, Trudi serves as the Director, Sales and Marketing, for Lucy Corr Village.

Jaeger, Clara is an LLI member who continues to enjoy pursuing her family history and wants to help others do the same.

Johnson, Eugene is Vice President in the Banking Supervision and Regulation department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commercial Studies from the University of Virginia. He has taught in several training programs for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He has a lifelong interest in the American Civil War and has met with classes in elementary, middle and high school on various aspects of the war.

Judd, Ruth has taken courses in crafts, sewing, pottery and sculpture at various places including Greenwich House in NYC, Chesterfield County, The Medici Institute in Florence, Italy and John Tyler Community College.

Kaufmann, Mel spent 35 years with the CIA dealing with communications, networking, and security. He holds ISCET certifications in Electronics/Radio/Computers and NRI certification in computers. Mel has been using computers since 1984.

Kidwell, Joan
an educator for 41 years in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Cumberland County and the Virginia Department of Education, teaching preschool two-year olds through college post-graduates and writing, implementing and evaluating state, federal and private foundation grants.

Kiener, Tom
A member of LLI since early 2010, Tom was born in the US to Swiss parents and grew up in a multi-lingual environment with French as his mother tongue. He is a graduate of the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne, Switzerland, and owned a restaurant in Geneva before retiring to Amelia, VA.

Kinney, Jonnie has many artistic talents including weaving and sculpting.

Knight, Dean comes to us from the Museum of the Confederacy where he serves as the supervisor of White House Operations. Dean has been teaching with us since 2009.

Kornegay, Ph.D., P.E., Billy H recently named the 2009 Volunteer Citizen of the Year by the Huguenot Ruritan Club, is also well known for his involvement in anything history. Serving as the Commander and Past Commander of the Powhatan American Legion Post 201, he is also a member of the WWII Round Table of Central Virginia. An army veteran with a Ph.D. in engineering, he was a college professor at VMI and Georgia Tech teaching environmental engineering. He is also a wine maker.

Langford, Mary serves as the training captain with the Metro Richmond EMS Council and as Advisor for the Junior Administration with the Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Leidheiser, Debbie Currently serves as the Senior Advocate & Disability Services at Chesterfield County. She was the founding Executive Director at Lifelong Learning Institute in Chesterfield and also the Foundation and Public Relations Director at Brandermill Woods Retirement Community.

Leslie, June is a lifelong Christian. She has been a member at LLI Chesterfield since 2008 and has also taught Bible classes in Chesterfield and Missouri.

Lewis, Annebel is a socio-cultural anthropologist who focuses on ritual and belief systems. She has taught at California State University-Fullerton and is a consultant on cultural diversity and competency issues, training and management. She is an LLI member, and currently the President of the Board of Directors.

Lurie, Joanna has an M.S. in Health Administration, a B.S. in Medical Biology, is a certified Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) at a Masters level (MASCP, MT(ASCP)). She is also certified in data base designs. She worked as a chemistry laboratory supervisor for 20 years and as the Laboratory Information Systems Coordinator for six years. She coordinated the installation and taught employees the hospital's laboratory computer system for a seven-hospital system on Long Island, New York. She has been on the LLI faculty since 2006.

Markus, Glenn holds degrees in philosophy (epistemology) and in Greek and Roman studies, both from The Johns Hopkins University. He has been an instructor at LLI from its beginning and is also an instructor at other education programs for seniors in Virginia.

Marquina, Sherron Health InSyncs, is a chiropractor and board certified Professional Applied Kinesiologist, with a functional medicine practice in Bon Air. Born in Virginia, she was "seasoned" in Texas, Rhode Island, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Missouri. Trained in mathematics, educational psychology, business, organization development, and natural healthcare, she enjoys integrating issues of complexity with wands of simplicity and splashes of humor.

McChesney, Bryan H is a minister, chaplain and educator. He received his associate’s degrees through the following terminal colleges: University of Richmond, Campbell, Wake Forest, University of South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Ruschlion.

McLean, Christy
is board certified by the American Board of Internal medicine. She specializes in Internal Medicine and treats patients age 18 and over. She received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia.

Miller, David W
is a board certified Orthopaedic surgeon at OrthoVirginia (formerly West End Orthopaedics). He specializes in Total Joint Replacement, Arthroscopic and Shoulder and Knee Surgery. He completed medical school at Georgetown University, as well as completed an M.S. degree there. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, and then completed his Orthopaedic Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and a Fellowship in Trauma at Queens Medical College in England. He was also an Army Flight Surgeon and flew Combat Missions during Desert Storm.

Moderegger, Anne has been an LLI member since 2010. She has experience in many forms of art, including pottery and landscaping!

Moses, Dorothy has been and LLI member since 2008. She has participated in writing critique classes.

Murphy, Mary Jane has a B.S. in Home Economics Education and a B.A. in Studio Art. She brings 25 years teaching experience to LLI and has been a member at Chesterfield since 2010.

Napier, Susan has worked with 3 local builders for over 10 years, preparing homes from the ground up to ready them for The Parade of Homes and also decorating their model homes. She has also worked for many private home owners both consulting and re-decorating and staging many homes to get them ready for market.

Neblett, Sallie has been an LLI member since 2008. She enjoys country music and dancing.

Nelson, Fred is a retired Air Force major general who served as a fighter pilot for most of his 36 years of duty. He also served at the Pentagon and has lived in Europe, Asia, the Pacific region and the Middle East. Fred has prepared taxes and held State management positions in the AARP Tax-Aide Program for 14 years. Tax- Aide is a volunteer organization sponsored by the AARP Foundation and IRS that prepares taxes free of charge for low and moderate income taxpayers.

Newman, Tom has a B.M.Ed. from East Carolina University, M.A. in Flute Performance from Radford University, M. Ed. In Supervision and Administration from the University of South Carolina with advanced degree from Pacific Western University and additional advanced studies from University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Boston University, and Indiana University. He is a private instrumental teacher, performer, and composer and currently conducts the James River Pops, Flute and Friends and Flutes on the Go.

Nichol, Lorraine will be a guest addition to our wonderful Great Books team.

Notzelman, Cathy
resides in Eastern Hanover County (Virginia) where she divides her time between software development and painting. She has taken numerous classes at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond including black and white photography and watercolor, which has been her primary focus since 2001. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows held by the Virginia Watercolor Society and the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild.

Orth, Lise
is a former school teacher and has been teaching aerobics for over twenty years. 

Ostrander, Mike
Trained in 1997 by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as an Angling Instructor, he now runs the James River Fishing School and Discover the James. Capt. Mike loves the James River. If he's not guiding for catfish, he's probably fishing in his gheenoe for smallmouth bass, eagle watching, fish watching, or just flipping rocks showing kids what's under them.

Parsons, Patricia has had a lifelong love affair with France and has visited there several times. She took French in high school and college and has hosted students and teachers in Trinity High School’s exchange program. She has been a member at LLI since 2009.

Paulett, Mary Lou is a Chesterfield resident who has been quilting for 15 years and successfully taught classes in her home before coming to LLI. She has been sewing, embroidering, and crafting for over 50 years and has some experience in macramé, crochet, silk ribbon embroidery, tatting, knitting, cross stitch and most other needle arts.

Paxton, Laurie has a background in sales in the financial services industry, with focus on variable annuities and long term care. She holds her Series 6 and 63 registrations along with Virginia insurance licensing. Laurie received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Central Michigan University.

Paxton, John is President and managing Director at Claris Financial, LLC. He began his financial services career as an advisor in 1996 with Wheat, First, Butcher, Singer. John holds the following licenses: Series 24, Series 7, Series 63 and Series 65. John received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce (Finance) from the University of Virginia.

Poulton, Robin E. Ph.D. is founder and currently Vice-President of the 501c3 association Virginia Friends of Mali, promoting education and exchange between Virginia and Africa, between Richmond and its new sister city Segou, on the Niger River. Initiator of the Virginia schools program Teaching Timbuktu.

Rawls, S. Waite III currently serves as the President and CEO of the Museum of the Confederacy. He received a B.A. at Virginia Military Institute and was awarded an M.B.A. and J. D. by the University of Virginia. Among the positions he held in the banking, investment, and money markets fields were: Managing Director, Chemical Bank, New York; Vice Chairman, Continental Bank, Chicago; Executive Vice President, The Chicago Corporation; and Chief Operating Officer of Ferrell Capital Management, Greenwich, Conn. He also led a start-up technology company and has been a visiting or adjunct professor at University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration and Illinois Institute of Technology.

Richards, Nelson M.D,
is retired MD from private practice and as attending Neurologist at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital, Clinical Professor Neurology, VCU/MCV. He has served on the Board of Directors of LLI and is both faculty and a member of LLI.

Rupnik, Sara Kay
lives in Richmond, Virginia, and coastal Georgia. She holds a M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College and is co-founder of Around the Block Writers Collaborative. Her fiction, nominated for a Pushcart Prize and short-listed for the Sean O'Faolain Short Story Prize, appears in literary journals from the U.S. and the U.K.

Samee, Saquib
is a board certified Cardiologist with Dominion Cardiology and practices cardiology and interventiona cardiology. He treats many heart conditions such as Heart Disease, Heart Arrhythmias, Heart Palpitations, Cardiac Arrest, and performs Cardiac Catheterization (including Peripheral Intervention), Angiography, Cardiac Stents, Cardiac Stress Test, Carotid Ultrasounds and more. He completed his medical school internship at State University of New York, his residency at Daconess Hospital, and completed several fellowships at Mayo Clinic, Hartford Hospital and university of Connecticut.

Schaffer, Les is a storyteller, retired Licensed Professional Counselor, former clay maker, advertising director, Army veteran, researcher, bouncer, grand and great-father. He is the founding member of the Tell Tale Hearts Storytellers Theater Company. Les has taught many popular classes here at LLI and can be counted upon to make anything he teaches come alive. Les presents original and traditional stories in a variety of settings, including concerts, schools, churches, workshops and conferences. He's currently making the rounds of regional story slams telling original stories of his (and his family's) checkered past.

Schickler, John
is a Chesterfield resident taking "photographs for many years." For the past two years he has been"making images" and using Picasa as a major editing tool. John is a member of the Camera Club of Richmond (VA) and the Image Makers Photography Club of Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. He has number one prize winning images, many edited using Picasa.

Schneider, Barbara J.
has been a member at LLI Chesterfield since 2007. She has facilitated many of the weekly group activities and chaired several of the fundraising projects. She also coordinates and chairs the annual Game Day event.

Scimone, Bonnie serves as the Community Outreach and Marketing Specialist for SeniorNavigator. She has over 20 years’ experience in sales, training, and relationship development. She graduated from Longwood College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and received her Elementary Education Teaching Certificate from VCU. She has been with SeniorNavigator for 7 years and serves as a Community Specialist for Central and Southside Virginia.

Seay, William
is an affiliated professor of History and Geography at John Tyler Community College. He is also a visiting summer lecturer on call at Concordia and McGill Universities in Montreal as well as at Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada and for the School of Continuing Education at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in Great Britain.

Shepherd, Terry
Creativity has always been an integral part ofher life. Watercolor Painting has been her choice of medium for the past 11 years but it has always been one of my favorite ways to spend time while providing immeasurable joy. Being able to share this love as a teacher has also been a true joy and it has brought me great satisfaction to see this same joy in my students. Another one of my great blessing is to have a wonderful husband who has encouraged and supported me in my art (he is also one of my biggest fans). I am a proud member of the James River Art League and the Virginia Watercolor Society. My work has been selected into juried exhibitions throughout the years. This past year one of my works was chosen for the annual Virginia Watercolor Society exhibition.

Short, Audrey E.
currently serves as an Instructor for the English Language Program through the Global Education Office at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Simpson, Jim
began his insurance career in 1974 as a company representative for State Mutual Life Assurance Company selling employee benefits and retirement plans to corporations. In 1979 he joined CAN insurance as the state manager for the Special Risk Division. In 1983 he moved to Richmond and headed the employee benefits office for State Mutual specializing in retirement plans. Since 1998 he has been in practice working in the senior markets selling life, health, long term care, and retirement planning.

Smiley, Dean H.
has been member of the Lifelong Learning Institute since 2007. His areas of study include human physiology, nutrition and biochemistry

Smith, Mark 
As the only active board certified chiropractic neurologist in the region, Dr. Smith uses his expert knowledge of the spine, the brain and nutritionally based programs to help his patients achieve lasting health and a safer future. Dr. Smith graduated from Logan College of Chiropractic. Completing post graduate work in neurology, he achieved Board Certification in Chiropractic Neurology. Continually learning in order to better help his patients, Dr. Smith has completed considerable post-graduate study in functional medicine, clinical nutrition therapies for chronic and acute disease conditions, physical therapy, rehabilitation, applied kinesiology, x-ray diagnosis, acupuncture and more. He has been in practice for 33 years.

has been teaching line dancing in several locations throughout the community.

Tokarz, Tom
is the seventh son of a Polish immigrant to graduate from Virginia Tech and the seventh son to proudly serve with the armed forces… six in World War II. He is a founding force behind the World War II Round Table of Central Virginia, committed to preserving the accomplishments of the Greatest Generation who are passing on average of 1000 to 2000 a day.

Tsironis Caruthers,Linda
Plans (AHIP) in 2005 and the Certified Senior Advisor designation from the Society of Certified Senior Advisors in 2006. She is CEO of Long-Term Care Consultants, Inc. a dedicated long-term care insurance agency.

Unetic, Sara
holds two Master Degrees in English, one from The University of London in British Literature and one from The University of Arkansas in American Literature and Grammar. She currently teaches part time honors high school English at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot.

Van Cleve, Laurie
Kids in the Kitchen owner, has shared cooking skills and recipes with children and adults for 7+ years and has over 20 years food industry experience. As a consultant for The Pampered Chef, she has shown hundreds of moms, dads, singles and children the joys of cooking in their own homes. She opened Kids in the Kitchen in May 2011 and is rewarded daily by the enthusiasm of students and parents.

von Ruffer, Kristine
was born, raised, and educated in Germany and is therefore fluent in German. She utilized this skill as a Teacher with the Berlitz School in New Jersey for many years. Kristine is tri-lingual -as she is also fluent in Italian after living in Milan, Italy for four years. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Marketing, from Handels-& Wirtschaftschule Kaemmerer, Germany. Prior to moving to Richmond, Virginia in 1993 with her husband, Kristine lived in New Jersey for over twenty years with their two daughters. She has extensive international corporate experience as she was the office manager for an import/export business, Tex Inc., for over 10 years, and also held other office manager positions prior/post her tenor at Tex Inc. In her past time she enjoys tennis, golf, hiking and classical music. She also volunteers with Richmond Symphony Orchestra League.

Wagner, Helene
optioned by major Hollywood production companies with one cast for CBS. She worked as a Writers Guild Literary Agent for a number of years. She is also the Founder and the Director of the Virginia Screenwriters' Forum, now in its 21st year. Helene teaches film writing courses and courses and a Richmond Theatre Studies at U of R. She also taught film classes at LLI for a number of years and is now a happy LLI card-playing member and would enjoy teaching some fun film classes again for LLI students. Helene and her husband Tom are the owners of Virginia Film Tours and Richmond City Guided Tours.

Warner, Alice has had six screenplays has studied and performed for more than 35 years. She taught for Chesterfield County Recreation Department for a number of years. She is a member of The Women of Selket Middle Eastern Dance Troupe.

Warner, Mervin
has been carving since the mid 1980's and started carving to learn to represent objects in three dimensions versus the two dimensions of drawing. He has been a member of the James River Wood Carvers since the mid 80's. Carving interests are, and have been, carving in the round and include faces, whales, dolphins and stylized birds.

Wilder, Nancy
is a graduate of Mary Washington and UVA, has been teaching Spanish in CCPS for 36 years and has recently retired this June, 2010. She has taught all levels of Spanish from beginning through AP. Nancy has lived, studied and traveled to Spain and Mexico several times throughout her college and professional career.

Winters, Glenn
is Outreach Musical Director with the Virginia Opera Association. His background includes teaching college-level piano, arts administration at two universities and extensive performing experience as a solo pianist and accompanist. 

Woodruff, Ellen graduated from The Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts. She majored in English and minored in journalism and secondary education. For many years she was a middle school English teacher and had several students place year after year in a county wide “Write-A-Thon.” Eventually she became interested in at-risk adolescent youths and worked in alternative middle schools. She earned a Masters in Special Education from the University of Southern Mississippi and became an elementary special education teacher. After receiving her doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University, she became an educational consultant.

Woods, Nena has a BA in French and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and has taught all levels of Spanish since 1981. Her latest experience was teaching K-8th grade at the Sabot at Stony Point private school here in Richmond. She has traveled many times to Spain especially the Canary Islands where her mother's family lives.

Woody, Art has BFA and M.Ed. Degrees from VCU. He has taught art in public schools as well as basic academic skills to adults. Mr. Woody enjoys drawing from nature and, most recently, has enjoyed drawing people and furniture in fast food restaurants.

Wright, Cathy
is the Collections Manager of the Museum of the Confederacy located in Richmond and she is responsible
for maintaining the world's most comprehensive collections of artifacts, manuscripts and photographs from the Confederate States of America. The museum's collections total approximately 15,000 items.
