There are some classes or programs, however, which require additional fees. Where there are additional fees, those fees must be paid to be registered. Fees can be paid by check or cash, or online. This course will focus on developing the basic drawing skills often used in the rendering of a representational painting. Instruction and exercises will be aimed at strengthening the student’s ability to translate what they see to paper. Students will be introduced to foundation concepts including contour line, negative space, value, perspective, and composition. This is a good class for beginner painters or anyone who simply wants to improve their drawing skills. Class size is limited. Supply list will be available in the office after you receive confirmation of your seat in the class.

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing. Come learn four "hands" (styles) Roman, Italic, Uncial and Text. All you need is a pen and lined paper…the rest is up to the instructor. Handwriting skills do not apply. Anyone can learn. Practice is the key. The course fee covers the cost of the pen, which will be provided for you.

Watercolor‐ Beginning (with Marti)

This watercolor class is for beginners and beginner-intermediates. Students will learn basic watercolor skills and techniques such as wet-on-wet, color washes, glazing, shading and textures. When you purchase supplies, please purchase high quality supplies - there will be a difference in the final result if you use lower quality items. The supply cost of approximately $150 includes eight colors of paint, three brushes, two kinds of pallets, board, canvas, tape and erasers. Do not purchase student grade paints such as Winsor/Newton, Cotman. Call the office, if you would like help ordering your supplies. Please pick up a supply list from the office and have your supplies for the first day of class. Class size is limited, so please confirm registration prior to purchasing your supplies.

Do you enjoy working with clay? Never tried but want to? This course will help you use your hands to create your own piece of pottery. There will be two classes for modeling the piece, one week off to allow it to dry and be fired, and then the final class for glazing. This class is for beginners and for fun! Needed supply list will be available in the office. There will be a small additional materials fee for the cost of firing, as determined by the number of participants. This course is designed to teach students how to listen to operatic music with an ear toward its narrative/psychological functions. Works analyzed include the final two productions of Virginia Opera's
2011-2012 season: Philip Glass's evocative ORPHEE, based on the classic film by Cocteau, and Guilbert & Sullivan's madcap farce THE MIKADO. Recommended for opera lovers and novices alike.

Recognizing Symbolism in Art

Have you ever wondered what the meaning is behind a painting? If what you are looking at is more than meets the eye? This course will be a combination of art history and discussion as we explore symbolism in art. Artists often use symbolism to convey emotion, story and absolute truths. My goal for this course is to teach you how to discern the symbolism present in many works of art so that you might incorporate it into your own work as well as create deeper connections to the artists whose works line the walls of galleries and museums.

Woodcarving: Part 2

This session of woodcarving will be carving a coon hound with a raccoon up a tree and building a diorama. Other projects will be undertaken near the end of the session as time permits. Carvers should have basic

Have you ever heard of the sculptress Louise Nevelson, who was known for her monochromatic, wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures? This class is loosely based on her works. You will be able to choose from a selection of objects or bring your own. The course leaders are excited to shared encouragement and guidance but there will be no formal instruction. This is art with no cost.
