This course is designed to teach students how to listen to operatic music with an ear toward its narrative/psychological functions. Works analyzed include the first two productions of Virginia Opera's 2011-2012 season: Verdi's Aida, a
tale of love, betrayal and vengeance in ancient Egypt, and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, a beloved setting of the classic Grimm's story. Recommended for opera lovers and novices alike.

We will be working on our own individual projects and will also besupporting LLI and its collaboration with Chesterfield County Police, Council on Aging and TRIAD, by completing projects for "Christmas in July: (May/June), "Santa's Visits" (November/December) and other outreach projects as needed.

Woodcarving

This session of woodcarving will be for both beginners and returning carvers. New carvers will be working in the round and require a basic carving knife, a Flexcut KN13 detail knife is recommended (available at Woodcraft); however, any sharp knife is acceptable. Returning carvers will start the session working on a relief carving; however, returning carvers may work on their own projects or work in the round. It's the perfect time of year to join our local "stamp star" and learn about the art of making nutcrackers! Glenn A. Crider is widely accepted as one of the best Nutcracker artisans in America if not the world. Join us for this hands on class, where you will make a Santa Train Ornament to take home with you.
