Your Lifelong Learning Institute membership gives you access to all of LLI classes and programs, most without any additional costs. There are some classes or programs, however, which require additional fees. Where there are additional fees, those fees must be paid to be registered. Fees can be paid by check or cash, or online. If paying by check, please clearly indicate the classes or programs being covered.

Have you ever been unhappy with your health care and find yourself going from one health care provider to another trying to find the solution to your problem(s)? This discussion class will explore complementary methods which enhance traditional medicine and non-conventional, alternative methods with the goal of healing the body, mind, and spirit. Class discussions will be based on information presented by or provided by the class moderator, Dean Smiley, from within videos, audios, readings from transcripts made from interviews with experts, and any personal experiences which a class member is willing to share. Each participant is encouraged to consult a health care professional before making any changes to their own health care protocol based on information gleaned from this course. Each participant will be required to sign an acknowledgement that this course is for discussion only and is not medical consultation or treatment.

Hearing As We Age

This three part course will begin with the Basics of Hearing and examine the changes in our hearing as we age. It will be followed by Hearing Loss Remediation: What Can You Do?, which will look at tools and techniques to assist with hearing loss, and will conclude with Improving Your Day to Day Communication. It is highly recommended that you participate in all three classes as they will build upon each other, but if you are unable, you may participate in individual sessions.

Damage to the joints from disease or injury can interfere with your movement and cause a lot of pain. It can be characterized by chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing, sleep disturbances, fatigue and often psychological distress. For those with severe symptoms, fibromyalgia can be extremely debilitating and interfere with basic daily activities. Begin the afternoon with a VIP luncheon where Dr. Dipin Gupta - Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Dr. Marijan Gospodnetic, OB-GYN, will discuss and demonstrate the newest minimally invasive surgical procedures using the da Vinci Robot. Between 1900 and 2000 American life expectancy jumped from 47 to 77 years. The 21st Century promises even larger and faster jumps. Advances in genetic engineering, tissue engineering, stem cell therapies, nanotechnology, hormone therapies, and other fields are likely to foster a longevity revolution in which life-spans get much longer and people look and function younger at older ages. What can psychology teach us about how to live longer, healthier, and happier? This course will use a variety of sources, media and experiential activities to consider cognitive and personality research, anti-aging and clinical issues. We will focus on what helps people age better and live longer as opposed to focusing on decline and pathology. The content is relevant to our aging better and to helping us age better as we deal with the challenges of aging.

What factors are associated with reduction of risks of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline in older adults; what are the therapeutic and adverse effects of interventions to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s; what are the therapeutic and adverse effects of interventions to improve or maintain cognitive ability or function; what are the differences in outcomes among identifiable groups; what are the relationships between the factors that affect Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline; and, what studies need to be done to make recommendations? This session will review the National Institute of Health findings of the consensus panel report is of a non-advocate 15-member panel representing various fields of health care
and a public representative convened at the National Institutes of Health.

How do you know if you’re healthy? What signals do you get when you’re not quite sick, but not in good health? How do you listen to your body to stay in tune with what your body needs? From this workshop you’ll take home new perspectives on listening and tuning into your body, easy to use tools for checking that you’re in a healthful balance, and increased confidence about lifestyle choices to regain and support your good health. In this interactive workshop Dr. Marquina provides no and low cost methods to help measure your current health status, guide minor corrections, and monitor your progress. You’ll learn the implications of some simple at home assessments. Well review concepts of health related to those self-testing tools, and their implications for illness, diet, stress, and exercise. This workshop is not for disease diagnosis, but for monitoring and taking charge of your health for better quality of life.
